OVERVIEW
To best employ the powers of the Brown University Catalan Literature Bibliography (BUCLIB), there are some simple guidelines that will help you unleash the versatility of the powerful search engine used to interact with the BUCLIB. The database comprises of bibliographical entries of Catalan writers and is designed to allow the scholar to perform their search in a multitude of ways, allowing for keyword searches, as well as date-line searches and specific field searches.

SEARCHING THE DATABASE
To perform a search, start by clicking on the word Search in the left-hand column. Once the next screen, titled Bibliography, has loaded you will be presented with a wide variety of choices for searching the BUCLIB.
The first one is probably the one that most users will tend to find most useful; the Keyword Search. In this field you can type in any appropriate search string. An example of a suitable search string could be 'France', 'Gimferrer' or 'art'. In order to enhance the keyword search and make it more useful, there is a list of pre-defined keywords that should be used. In addition to these pre-defined keywords, the user can also search on an author's name, year, title or generally any other bibliographical information.

When typing in information in the keyword search field, the user can type in the appropriate words in any order without any logical operatiors. Thus the user does not have to use AND's or OR's. Furthermore, a so called wildcard search is also possible. If the user wants to see all records in the database, the button Find should be clicked on with all fields empty. This type of search might take quite a while so please be patient. A more limited wildcard search can be employed by substituting an asterisk (*) for a particular character. Doing so will enable the search to look for anything that matches exactly what the user has specified in addition to then asterisk, while the asterisk will match anything. For example, the search for E*T, would return the word EAT, and also EMT.

Detailed Search
In addition to the keyword search, there are several other fields that the user can choose to search. Entering information in one field, while leaving all other fields blank will search for records that meet the matching criterion for the specified fields. It will not require that the fields that are left blank in the browser are empty in the database. The different fields are:

Pressing the Reset button will return all fields to their initial empty state. If the Find button is pressed after, the search will return all records presently available in the database.

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ENTRIES
After pressing the Find key, the user will be presented with a page listing all bibliographical entries that match the search criterion specified by the user. At this point you can copy the MLA-style entry by selecting it and using your computer's or software's build-in Copy function. You can the use your computer's Paste function to paste the bibliographical entry into an application of your choice.

At the top of the page it will tell you how many records there were that matched you criterion. If there were more than one hundered matches in the CDB, then you will have to click on the button Next 100. The next screen will then have the remaining records, and possibly another Next 100 button depending on how many records there are. You will also see a button Prev 100 which will let you look at the previous records again.

If you would like to see a detailed breakdown of the entry, click on the ID number preceeding the bibliographical entry. Here you can see what the record actually comprises of. Most users will not find this detailed view very helpful, but for the ones that will, it has been included.

ADDING RECORDS TO THE BUCLIB
