Copyright

The Inscriptions of Israel/Palestine project follows a long tradition of reprinting scholarly editions of epigraphical material with appropriate attributions. Our policy of using copyrighted material thus does not appreciably differ from that of the Supplementum Epigraphicum Graecum. We use other copyrighted material (e.g., images and maps) only with permissions.

Although we are forming a collection of material that has already been published, we do correct obvious mistakes; add scholarly value through tagging the content; and reframe the inscriptions to allow them to be seen in new and shifting ways. We thus aim not merely to reproduce published material, but to create a new digital edition.

The copyright for all scholarly contributions remain with the contributors, although by publishing their contribution here they assign to ILI a non-exclusive and permanent right to display these materials, as well as rights to any work ILI staff contributed unless otherwise specified.

Citation

Different kinds of materials on this website require different forms of citation. In general, scholarly material that has been reprinted here or used with permission should be primarily cited according to its original source, although the ILI identifier might secondarily be indicated. In no case are we able to give "permission" to others to use material that is under someone else's copyright. For example, for permission to use a map that we have digitally reproduced with permission of the copyright holder you must request permission from the copyright holder. Unique scholarly contributions made by contributors to the site, however, must be acknowledged.

If, for example, we reproduce a text from J. B. Frey, Corpus Inscriptionum Iudaicarum (a badly outdated but still important corpus of Jewish inscriptions), you should refer to it by the number given to it by Frey (e.g., CII 733). If, however, you would like to use our English translation (Frey's are in French), you should also indicate this and refer to the ILI number. As for all digital publications, use of other materials (e.g., essays) must follow the "fair use" guidelines and be clearly attributed.

Under no circumstances may material from this site be reproduced for commercial purposes.
