Faculty Grant Projects for 2006-2007
Bob Lee, American Civilization
Asian American History and Resources at Brown: Bob Lee and his students are researching Asian American student history at Brown with the goal of collecting and publishing materials that represent it. They would like to make this into an archive that can be added to. They would like it to be available for the use of other students.
Evelyn Lincoln, History of Art and Architecture
The Theater that was Rome:Evie Lincoln has been studying and teaching with a digitized collection of illustrated books on the architecture and engineering of early modern Rome. Her primary interest is in the books themselves: how the authors, engravers and publishers presented the information about Rome to their audience. A digital presentation of these rare and expensive books would allow readers to study not only the images, but also the text and context of the books. Many of the books are already in the CDI's digital library, and the CDI is experimenting with different types of navigation and viewing software for images. She would like to build a website around the library resource that would contain essays and other scholarly information about the books, their production and reception.
Steve Lubar, John Nicholas Brown Center, American Civilization
Digital Repository for Exhibition Archives: Steve Lubar would like to develop an archival system in which museums can save the materials generated in the process of mounting an exhibit, and documentation of the exhibit itself. He would like this to be a collaborative process, and to allow museums to contribute as much or as little documentation as they have resources for. The work on this project includes a needs analysis, researching similar initiatives, and working with the library and STG to better understand metadata and interface issues. Once the research is complete, STG will assist in developing a prototype or in experimenting with existing software.
Stratis Papaioannou, Classics
Michael Psellos on the Web:Stratis Papaioannou is studyng a Byzantine author of the 11th c., Michael Psellos. He is involved in two book projects on this author, and would like to create a website devoted to Psellos, both as an introduction to his life and works, but also as tool to help himself and potentially other colleagues develop and share information about Psellos. He would like the website to represent part of his work in progress, as he clarifies the chronology of the letters and identifies the people who appear in them. He will also use the website as a uptodate publication medium for bibliography on Psellos.
Michael Steinberg, Cogut Center for the Humanities
Digital Humanities Initiative Consultation: The Cogut Center for the Humanities would like to work with STG to explore and start planning its digital activities. They would like to form an advisory group, select academic and technical issues on which to focus, and plan a digital humanities lab space that is shaped by these issues. This project is differs from the typical STG project in that it has no implementation component.
Mark Tribe, Modern Culture and Media
Port Huron Project: Mark Tribe will be working on a conceptual art project about protest speeches. These will be re-enacted using actors in their original venues. The speeches will be recorded using various media (high-definition video, 16mm film, surround sound, and still images). The project needs a website to document and display the work. It will also be part of the preliminary work for another project; an online archive of protest speech videos. STG will help design and implement the documentary website, and also lead a feasibility study to identify the best dissemination models for the archive
