Voyage of the Slave Ship Sally (1764-1765)

STG has developed a website to publish and explicate the documentary evidence of the first slave trading voyage invested in by the Brown brothers of Providence, RI. We have encoded the texts of letters, contracts and the ship's logbook, and are presenting them so that the texts are fully searchable and also browsable using extra information that has been included in the markup such as regularlization of names, commodities and places. The project has been planned and implemented in close collaboration with Brown's Center for Digital Initiatives in the Brown library.
Prof. James Campbell is leading the Brown University Committee on Slavery and Justice. The committee is investigating the contributions that slavery made to the early days of Brown University, and will also recommend ways to make the community at large think productively about slavery and and its aftermath.
Part of the committee's final report, which was released in October, 2006 will be the Sally website.
