Barry

Barry is Manager of Systems and Facilities for the Scholarly Technology Group. He has a wide range of responsibilities, foremost among which is maintaining and directing the computing and physical facilities of STG, the Project Room, the Multimedia Lab and the Women Writers Project. These facilities are quite diverse since there are at least seven operating systems, including various versions and variations of each, on several types of hardware platforms.

In addition to maintaining desktop and portable systems, Barry administers five Macintosh platform servers and a Windows NT server. He also maintains several SUN and LINUX servers.

Barry is also responsible for the coordination, hiring, scheduling, and payroll of student consultants for STG and the Multimedia Lab.

Some of Barry's recent activities at STG include:

  • A redesign of the Project Room layout to facilitate an increased number of diverse workstations and a "server farm." The project also includes an upgrade of existing systems and the addition of an audio/video workstation.
  • Upgrading the STG network to a switched 100Mb network from a shared 10Mb network configuration. This project has also included a change in STG's backbone connection to Brown's 155Mb ATM Network.
  • Remolding/upgrade of the Multimedia Lab and Multimedia Classroom. This remolding included the MML's website as well as the computing and physical facilities of the MML.
  • Planning substantial changes to STG's Conference Room. Improvements will include audio capture, computerized interactive conferencing, teleconferencing and improvements for video/data projection and audio playback.
  • Other projects are: desktop conferencing and interaction systems, testing and assessing new operating systems, software and hardware--part of the ongoing exploration of new technology and the ways to apply these ever-changing resources.

Barry has served as Technology Editor for the National Association of College Broadcasters and has presented sessions at their national conferences and worked as a consultant for the association and its members.

Prior to coming to Brown, Barry was the Academic Technical Director for the Department of Visual and Performing Arts at Fairfield University in Fairfield, CT. At Fairfield, Barry served as an advisor to the Visual and Performing Arts Department and the university as a whole to integrate technology into more classroom, study and research facilities. As part of this project, he introduced faculty and staff members to available technologies and taught introductions to computer systems and software packages.

Barry graduated from Rhode Island College with a B.A. in theatre design and technology with concentrations in communications and technology education. He continues to take and teach courses and seminars in digital media and computer technologies.
