curriculum vitae

As Electronic Publications Editor for the Women Writers Project, Paul Caton uses a mixture of Perl scripts, PHP, XSLT, and CSS to present the WWP's encoded texts in Women Writers Online. Paul began working at the WWP in 1994, first as a graduate student proofreader, then as a text encoder, before joining the Project's full-time staff in 1997. In addition to his work for the WWP, Paul consults on STG projects and may find himself reviewing a DTD, building a MySQL database, or coding an online annotation system.

His current research interests include new ways of representing encoded texts and new models of online scholarly digital text resources.

A United Kingdom native, Paul Caton took a B.A. in English and American Literature at the University of East Anglia in 1980 and an M.A. in literature from the University of Leeds in 1990 before entering the Ph.D. program in Brown University's English Department in 1991. The intervening periods were spent in stints as a customs officer, ESL teacher (Indonesia, Portugal, London, and Kuwait), civil servant, and unemployed layabout. In 2004 he earned his doctorate with a dissertation on theoretical issues in text encoding and the dialectical relationship between text encoding and English studies with respect to self-critique and theory.
